A Holy Nap

On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.  Genesis 2:2-4 (NLT)

According to the “Good Book” rest is a holy pursuit.  It’s good, it’s needed, it’s holy, it’s godly, and it’s biblical.     Without fail every couple but one who has stayed at David’s Refuge has taken this biblical injunction and pursued it with passion.  They check in, they unpack, and they sleep.  Sometimes it’s a little catnap, sometimes it’s a 20 minute siesta, but we have also seen a four hour power nap that rivaled Rip Van Winkle’s famous snooze.  They come exhausted, weary, and in need of rest.   As they tuck themselves in and lay their heads on the pillow David’s Refuge becomes a holy place where restoration, renewal, and hope begin to unfurl in their dry and weary souls.

Not only does napping have spiritual benefits studies have actually proven that napping is good for us both physically and emotionally.   They make us more patient, they reduce stress, they help us increase our reaction time, and they improve our health and ability to learn.  All in all taking a nap is just plain good for you.

Maybe one of the nicest and healthy things you could do for a friend, family member, or neighbor who has a child with special needs is offer them 20 minutes of time so they can take a quick nap.  No guilt!  No Shame!  Twenty minutes of soul, mind, and body recharging.  Grab your pillow, pull the curtains, close your eyes, and may your dreams be sweet.
